How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 99 = 6.93
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.93 ÷ 99 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/99, so part = 7 × 99 ÷ 100 = 6.93. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*99. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.93 is the 7% share of 99. The remaining 93% is 92.07, and the two parts add back up to 99.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $99 saves $6.93, so you pay $92.07.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 99 by 7% gives 105.93 and decreasing it by 7% gives 92.07. These do not cancel out: raising 99 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 98.5149, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
