How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 99 ÷ 100 = 0.99
- Multiply: 0.99 × 7 = 6.93
- Check: Work backwards: 6.93 ÷ 7 × 100 = 99%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 99/100 = part/7, so part = 99 × 7 ÷ 100 = 6.93. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =99%*7. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
6.93 is the 99% share of 7. The remaining 1% is 0.07, and the two parts add back up to 7.
Discounts: 99% off an item priced $7 saves $6.93, so you pay $0.07.
Adding and taking away 99%
Increasing 7 by 99% gives 13.93 and decreasing it by 99% gives 0.07. These do not cancel out: raising 7 by 99% and then lowering the result by 99% ends at 0.1393, because the second 99% is taken of a bigger number.
