How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 39 = 27.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 27.3 ÷ 39 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/39, so part = 70 × 39 ÷ 100 = 27.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*39. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

27.3 is the 70% share of 39. The remaining 30% is 11.7, and the two parts add back up to 39.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $39 saves $27.3, so you pay $11.7.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 39 by 70% gives 66.3 and decreasing it by 70% gives 11.7. These do not cancel out: raising 39 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 19.89, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
