How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 51 = 35.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 35.7 ÷ 51 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/51, so part = 70 × 51 ÷ 100 = 35.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*51. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

35.7 is the 70% share of 51. The remaining 30% is 15.3, and the two parts add back up to 51.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $51 saves $35.7, so you pay $15.3.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 51 by 70% gives 86.7 and decreasing it by 70% gives 15.3. These do not cancel out: raising 51 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 26.01, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
