How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
  2. Multiply: 0.51 × 70 = 35.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 35.7 ÷ 70 × 100 = 51%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/70, so part = 51 × 70 ÷ 100 = 35.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =51%*70. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

35.7 is the 51% share of 70. The remaining 49% is 34.3, and the two parts add back up to 70.

Discounts: 51% off an item priced $70 saves $35.7, so you pay $34.3.

Adding and taking away 51%

Increasing 70 by 51% gives 105.7 and decreasing it by 51% gives 34.3. These do not cancel out: raising 70 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 51.793, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.
