How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 56 = 39.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 39.2 ÷ 56 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/56, so part = 70 × 56 ÷ 100 = 39.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*56. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

39.2 is the 70% share of 56. The remaining 30% is 16.8, and the two parts add back up to 56.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $56 saves $39.2, so you pay $16.8.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 56 by 70% gives 95.2 and decreasing it by 70% gives 16.8. These do not cancel out: raising 56 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 28.56, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
