How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 72 = 50.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 50.4 ÷ 72 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/72, so part = 70 × 72 ÷ 100 = 50.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*72. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

50.4 is the 70% share of 72. The remaining 30% is 21.6, and the two parts add back up to 72.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $72 saves $50.4, so you pay $21.6.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 72 by 70% gives 122.4 and decreasing it by 70% gives 21.6. These do not cancel out: raising 72 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 36.72, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
