How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 72 ÷ 100 = 0.72
- Multiply: 0.72 × 25 = 18
- Check: Work backwards: 18 ÷ 25 × 100 = 72%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 72/100 = part/25, so part = 72 × 25 ÷ 100 = 18. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =72%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
18 is the 72% share of 25. The remaining 28% is 7, and the two parts add back up to 25.
Discounts: 72% off an item priced $25 saves $18, so you pay $7.
Adding and taking away 72%
Increasing 25 by 72% gives 43 and decreasing it by 72% gives 7. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 72% and then lowering the result by 72% ends at 12.04, because the second 72% is taken of a bigger number.
