How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 72 = 18
  3. Check: Work backwards: 18 ÷ 72 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/72, so part = 25 × 72 ÷ 100 = 18. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*72. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

18 is the 25% share of 72. The remaining 75% is 54, and the two parts add back up to 72.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $72 saves $18, so you pay $54.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 72 by 25% gives 90 and decreasing it by 25% gives 54. These do not cancel out: raising 72 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 67.5, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
