How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 75 = 1.5
- Check: Work backwards: 1.5 ÷ 75 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/75, so part = 2 × 75 ÷ 100 = 1.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*75. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.5 is the 2% share of 75. The remaining 98% is 73.5, and the two parts add back up to 75.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $75 saves $1.5, so you pay $73.5.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 75 by 2% gives 76.5 and decreasing it by 2% gives 73.5. These do not cancel out: raising 75 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 74.97, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 75% of 2. 2% of 75 and 75% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 75 ÷ 100 = 1.5), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
