How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75
  2. Multiply: 0.75 × 89 = 66.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 66.75 ÷ 89 × 100 = 75%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 75/100 = part/89, so part = 75 × 89 ÷ 100 = 66.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =75%*89. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

66.75 is the 75% share of 89. The remaining 25% is 22.25, and the two parts add back up to 89.

Discounts: 75% off an item priced $89 saves $66.75, so you pay $22.25.

Adding and taking away 75%

Increasing 89 by 75% gives 155.75 and decreasing it by 75% gives 22.25. These do not cancel out: raising 89 by 75% and then lowering the result by 75% ends at 38.9375, because the second 75% is taken of a bigger number.
