How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 78 ÷ 100 = 0.78
  2. Multiply: 0.78 × 1 = 0.78
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.78 ÷ 1 × 100 = 78%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 78/100 = part/1, so part = 78 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.78. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =78%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.78 is the 78% share of 1. The remaining 22% is 0.22, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 78% off an item priced $1 saves $0.78, so you pay $0.22.

Adding and taking away 78%

Increasing 1 by 78% gives 1.78 and decreasing it by 78% gives 0.22. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 78% and then lowering the result by 78% ends at 0.3916, because the second 78% is taken of a bigger number.
