How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
- Multiply: 0.01 × 78 = 0.78
- Check: Work backwards: 0.78 ÷ 78 × 100 = 1%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/78, so part = 1 × 78 ÷ 100 = 0.78. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =1%*78. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.78 is the 1% share of 78. The remaining 99% is 77.22, and the two parts add back up to 78.
Discounts: 1% off an item priced $78 saves $0.78, so you pay $77.22.
Adding and taking away 1%
Increasing 78 by 1% gives 78.78 and decreasing it by 1% gives 77.22. These do not cancel out: raising 78 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 77.9922, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 78% of 1. 1% of 78 and 78% of 1 are always equal (both are 1 × 78 ÷ 100 = 0.78), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
