How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 8 ÷ 100 = 0.08
- Multiply: 0.08 × 20 = 1.6
- Check: Work backwards: 1.6 ÷ 20 × 100 = 8%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 8/100 = part/20, so part = 8 × 20 ÷ 100 = 1.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =8%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.6 is the 8% share of 20. The remaining 92% is 18.4, and the two parts add back up to 20.
Discounts: 8% off an item priced $20 saves $1.6, so you pay $18.4.
Adding and taking away 8%
Increasing 20 by 8% gives 21.6 and decreasing it by 8% gives 18.4. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 8% and then lowering the result by 8% ends at 19.872, because the second 8% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 8. 8% of 20 and 20% of 8 are always equal (both are 8 × 20 ÷ 100 = 1.6), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
