How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
  2. Multiply: 0.8 × 8 = 6.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.4 ÷ 8 × 100 = 80%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/8, so part = 80 × 8 ÷ 100 = 6.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =80%*8. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.4 is the 80% share of 8. The remaining 20% is 1.6, and the two parts add back up to 8.

Discounts: 80% off an item priced $8 saves $6.4, so you pay $1.6.

Adding and taking away 80%

Increasing 8 by 80% gives 14.4 and decreasing it by 80% gives 1.6. These do not cancel out: raising 8 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 2.88, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 8% of 80. 80% of 8 and 8% of 80 are always equal (both are 80 × 8 ÷ 100 = 6.4), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
