How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 8 ÷ 100 = 0.08
- Multiply: 0.08 × 80 = 6.4
- Check: Work backwards: 6.4 ÷ 80 × 100 = 8%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 8/100 = part/80, so part = 8 × 80 ÷ 100 = 6.4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =8%*80. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
6.4 is the 8% share of 80. The remaining 92% is 73.6, and the two parts add back up to 80.
Discounts: 8% off an item priced $80 saves $6.4, so you pay $73.6.
Adding and taking away 8%
Increasing 80 by 8% gives 86.4 and decreasing it by 8% gives 73.6. These do not cancel out: raising 80 by 8% and then lowering the result by 8% ends at 79.488, because the second 8% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 80% of 8. 8% of 80 and 80% of 8 are always equal (both are 8 × 80 ÷ 100 = 6.4), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
