How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 81 ÷ 100 = 0.81
  2. Multiply: 0.81 × 100 = 81
  3. Check: Work backwards: 81 ÷ 100 × 100 = 81%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 81/100 = part/100, so part = 81 × 100 ÷ 100 = 81. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =81%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

81 is the 81% share of 100. The remaining 19% is 19, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 81% off an item priced $100 saves $81, so you pay $19.

Adding and taking away 81%

Increasing 100 by 81% gives 181 and decreasing it by 81% gives 19. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 81% and then lowering the result by 81% ends at 34.39, because the second 81% is taken of a bigger number.
