How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 85 ÷ 100 = 0.85
- Multiply: 0.85 × 80 = 68
- Check: Work backwards: 68 ÷ 80 × 100 = 85%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 85/100 = part/80, so part = 85 × 80 ÷ 100 = 68. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =85%*80. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
68 is the 85% share of 80. The remaining 15% is 12, and the two parts add back up to 80.
Discounts: 85% off an item priced $80 saves $68, so you pay $12.
Adding and taking away 85%
Increasing 80 by 85% gives 148 and decreasing it by 85% gives 12. These do not cancel out: raising 80 by 85% and then lowering the result by 85% ends at 22.2, because the second 85% is taken of a bigger number.
