How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 86 ÷ 100 = 0.86
- Multiply: 0.86 × 4 = 3.44
- Check: Work backwards: 3.44 ÷ 4 × 100 = 86%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 86/100 = part/4, so part = 86 × 4 ÷ 100 = 3.44. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =86%*4. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
3.44 is the 86% share of 4. The remaining 14% is 0.56, and the two parts add back up to 4.
Discounts: 86% off an item priced $4 saves $3.44, so you pay $0.56.
Adding and taking away 86%
Increasing 4 by 86% gives 7.44 and decreasing it by 86% gives 0.56. These do not cancel out: raising 4 by 86% and then lowering the result by 86% ends at 1.0416, because the second 86% is taken of a bigger number.
