How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
  2. Multiply: 0.09 × 2 = 0.18
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.18 ÷ 2 × 100 = 9%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/2, so part = 9 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.18. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =9%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.18 is the 9% share of 2. The remaining 91% is 1.82, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 9% off an item priced $2 saves $0.18, so you pay $1.82.

Adding and taking away 9%

Increasing 2 by 9% gives 2.18 and decreasing it by 9% gives 1.82. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 1.9838, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 9. 9% of 2 and 2% of 9 are always equal (both are 9 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.18), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
