How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
  2. Multiply: 0.09 × 6 = 0.54
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.54 ÷ 6 × 100 = 9%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/6, so part = 9 × 6 ÷ 100 = 0.54. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =9%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.54 is the 9% share of 6. The remaining 91% is 5.46, and the two parts add back up to 6.

Discounts: 9% off an item priced $6 saves $0.54, so you pay $5.46.

Adding and taking away 9%

Increasing 6 by 9% gives 6.54 and decreasing it by 9% gives 5.46. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 5.9514, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.
