How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
  2. Multiply: 0.06 × 9 = 0.54
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.54 ÷ 9 × 100 = 6%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/9, so part = 6 × 9 ÷ 100 = 0.54. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =6%*9. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.54 is the 6% share of 9. The remaining 94% is 8.46, and the two parts add back up to 9.

Discounts: 6% off an item priced $9 saves $0.54, so you pay $8.46.

Adding and taking away 6%

Increasing 9 by 6% gives 9.54 and decreasing it by 6% gives 8.46. These do not cancel out: raising 9 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 8.9676, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 9% of 6. 6% of 9 and 9% of 6 are always equal (both are 6 × 9 ÷ 100 = 0.54), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
