How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
  2. Multiply: 0.09 × 7 = 0.63
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.63 ÷ 7 × 100 = 9%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/7, so part = 9 × 7 ÷ 100 = 0.63. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =9%*7. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.63 is the 9% share of 7. The remaining 91% is 6.37, and the two parts add back up to 7.

Discounts: 9% off an item priced $7 saves $0.63, so you pay $6.37.

Adding and taking away 9%

Increasing 7 by 9% gives 7.63 and decreasing it by 9% gives 6.37. These do not cancel out: raising 7 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 6.9433, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.
