How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 9 = 0.63
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.63 ÷ 9 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/9, so part = 7 × 9 ÷ 100 = 0.63. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*9. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.63 is the 7% share of 9. The remaining 93% is 8.37, and the two parts add back up to 9.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $9 saves $0.63, so you pay $8.37.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 9 by 7% gives 9.63 and decreasing it by 7% gives 8.37. These do not cancel out: raising 9 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 8.9559, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 9% of 7. 7% of 9 and 9% of 7 are always equal (both are 7 × 9 ÷ 100 = 0.63), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
