How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
  2. Multiply: 0.09 × 90 = 8.1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 8.1 ÷ 90 × 100 = 9%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/90, so part = 9 × 90 ÷ 100 = 8.1. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =9%*90. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

8.1 is the 9% share of 90. The remaining 91% is 81.9, and the two parts add back up to 90.

Discounts: 9% off an item priced $90 saves $8.1, so you pay $81.9.

Adding and taking away 9%

Increasing 90 by 9% gives 98.1 and decreasing it by 9% gives 81.9. These do not cancel out: raising 90 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 89.271, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.
