How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 90 ÷ 100 = 0.9
  2. Multiply: 0.9 × 98 = 88.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 88.2 ÷ 98 × 100 = 90%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 90/100 = part/98, so part = 90 × 98 ÷ 100 = 88.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =90%*98. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

88.2 is the 90% share of 98. The remaining 10% is 9.8, and the two parts add back up to 98.

Discounts: 90% off an item priced $98 saves $88.2, so you pay $9.8.

Adding and taking away 90%

Increasing 98 by 90% gives 186.2 and decreasing it by 90% gives 9.8. These do not cancel out: raising 98 by 90% and then lowering the result by 90% ends at 18.62, because the second 90% is taken of a bigger number.
