How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 91 ÷ 100 = 0.91
  2. Multiply: 0.91 × 50 = 45.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 45.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 91%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 91/100 = part/50, so part = 91 × 50 ÷ 100 = 45.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =91%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

45.5 is the 91% share of 50. The remaining 9% is 4.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 91% off an item priced $50 saves $45.5, so you pay $4.5.

Adding and taking away 91%

Increasing 50 by 91% gives 95.5 and decreasing it by 91% gives 4.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 91% and then lowering the result by 91% ends at 8.595, because the second 91% is taken of a bigger number.
