How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 95 ÷ 100 = 0.95
  2. Multiply: 0.95 × 5 = 4.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.75 ÷ 5 × 100 = 95%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 95/100 = part/5, so part = 95 × 5 ÷ 100 = 4.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =95%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.75 is the 95% share of 5. The remaining 5% is 0.25, and the two parts add back up to 5.

Discounts: 95% off an item priced $5 saves $4.75, so you pay $0.25.

Adding and taking away 95%

Increasing 5 by 95% gives 9.75 and decreasing it by 95% gives 0.25. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 95% and then lowering the result by 95% ends at 0.4875, because the second 95% is taken of a bigger number.
