How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 98 ÷ 100 = 0.98
- Multiply: 0.98 × 3 = 2.94
- Check: Work backwards: 2.94 ÷ 3 × 100 = 98%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 98/100 = part/3, so part = 98 × 3 ÷ 100 = 2.94. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =98%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.94 is the 98% share of 3. The remaining 2% is 0.06, and the two parts add back up to 3.
Discounts: 98% off an item priced $3 saves $2.94, so you pay $0.06.
Adding and taking away 98%
Increasing 3 by 98% gives 5.94 and decreasing it by 98% gives 0.06. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 98% and then lowering the result by 98% ends at 0.1188, because the second 98% is taken of a bigger number.
