How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 99 ÷ 100 = 0.99
  2. Multiply: 0.99 × 51 = 50.49
  3. Check: Work backwards: 50.49 ÷ 51 × 100 = 99%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 99/100 = part/51, so part = 99 × 51 ÷ 100 = 50.49. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =99%*51. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

50.49 is the 99% share of 51. The remaining 1% is 0.51, and the two parts add back up to 51.

Discounts: 99% off an item priced $51 saves $50.49, so you pay $0.51.

Adding and taking away 99%

Increasing 51 by 99% gives 101.49 and decreasing it by 99% gives 0.51. These do not cancel out: raising 51 by 99% and then lowering the result by 99% ends at 1.0149, because the second 99% is taken of a bigger number.
