How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Divide the part by it: 30 ÷ 0.15 = 200
  3. Check: Work forwards: 15% of 200 is 0.15 × 200 = 30.

Another method. As a proportion: 30/whole = 15/100, so whole = 30 × 100 ÷ 15 = 200. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =30/15%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

30 is the 15% share of 200. The other 85% is 170.

Discounts: if 30 dollars is a 15% saving, the original price was $200.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 15% is 30, then 1% is 30 ÷ 15 = 2, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 20, 50% is 100 and 100% is 200.
