How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 30 ÷ 100 = 0.3
  2. Divide the part by it: 15 ÷ 0.3 = 50
  3. Check: Work forwards: 30% of 50 is 0.3 × 50 = 15.

Another method. As a proportion: 15/whole = 30/100, so whole = 15 × 100 ÷ 30 = 50. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15/30%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

15 is the 30% share of 50. The other 70% is 35.

Discounts: if 15 dollars is a 30% saving, the original price was $50.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 30% is 15, then 1% is 15 ÷ 30 = 0.5, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 5, 50% is 25 and 100% is 50.
