How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
  2. Divide the part by it: 10 ÷ 0.2 = 50
  3. Check: Work forwards: 20% of 50 is 0.2 × 50 = 10.

Another method. As a proportion: 10/whole = 20/100, so whole = 10 × 100 ÷ 20 = 50. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10/20%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

10 is the 20% share of 50. The other 80% is 40.

Discounts: if 10 dollars is a 20% saving, the original price was $50.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 20% is 10, then 1% is 10 ÷ 20 = 0.5, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 5, 50% is 25 and 100% is 50.
