How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Divide the part by it: 45 ÷ 0.1 = 450
- Check: Work forwards: 10% of 450 is 0.1 × 450 = 45.
Another method. As a proportion: 45/whole = 10/100, so whole = 45 × 100 ÷ 10 = 450. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =45/10%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.
