How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Divide the part by it: 10 ÷ 0.1 = 100
- Check: Work forwards: 10% of 100 is 0.1 × 100 = 10.
Another method. As a proportion: 10/whole = 10/100, so whole = 10 × 100 ÷ 10 = 100. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10/10%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.
What the result means
10 is the 10% share of 100. The other 90% is 90.
Discounts: if 10 dollars is a 10% saving, the original price was $100.
Using 1% as a stepping stone
If 10% is 10, then 1% is 10 ÷ 10 = 1, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 10, 50% is 50 and 100% is 100.
