How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
  2. Divide the part by it: 45 ÷ 0.5 = 90
  3. Check: Work forwards: 50% of 90 is 0.5 × 90 = 45.

Another method. As a proportion: 45/whole = 50/100, so whole = 45 × 100 ÷ 50 = 90. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45/50%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

45 is the 50% share of 90. The other 50% is 45.

Discounts: if 45 dollars is a 50% saving, the original price was $90.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 50% is 45, then 1% is 45 ÷ 50 = 0.9, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 9, 50% is 45 and 100% is 90.
