How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Divide the part by it: 45 ÷ 0.15 = 300
  3. Check: Work forwards: 15% of 300 is 0.15 × 300 = 45.

Another method. As a proportion: 45/whole = 15/100, so whole = 45 × 100 ÷ 15 = 300. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45/15%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

45 is the 15% share of 300. The other 85% is 255.

Discounts: if 45 dollars is a 15% saving, the original price was $300.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 15% is 45, then 1% is 45 ÷ 15 = 3, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 30, 50% is 150 and 100% is 300.
