How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Divide the part by it: 45 ÷ 0.6 = 75
  3. Check: Work forwards: 60% of 75 is 0.6 × 75 = 45.

Another method. As a proportion: 45/whole = 60/100, so whole = 45 × 100 ÷ 60 = 75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45/60%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

45 is the 60% share of 75. The other 40% is 30.

Discounts: if 45 dollars is a 60% saving, the original price was $75.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 60% is 45, then 1% is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 7.5, 50% is 37.5 and 100% is 75.
