How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Divide the part by it: 60 ÷ 0.4 = 150
  3. Check: Work forwards: 40% of 150 is 0.4 × 150 = 60.

Another method. As a proportion: 60/whole = 40/100, so whole = 60 × 100 ÷ 40 = 150. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60/40%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

60 is the 40% share of 150. The other 60% is 90.

Discounts: if 60 dollars is a 40% saving, the original price was $150.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 40% is 60, then 1% is 60 ÷ 40 = 1.5, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 15, 50% is 75 and 100% is 150.
