How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
  2. Divide the part by it: 50 ÷ 0.2 = 250
  3. Check: Work forwards: 20% of 250 is 0.2 × 250 = 50.

Another method. As a proportion: 50/whole = 20/100, so whole = 50 × 100 ÷ 20 = 250. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =50/20%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

50 is the 20% share of 250. The other 80% is 200.

Discounts: if 50 dollars is a 20% saving, the original price was $250.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 20% is 50, then 1% is 50 ÷ 20 = 2.5, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 25, 50% is 125 and 100% is 250.
