How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
  2. Divide the part by it: 60 ÷ 0.5 = 120
  3. Check: Work forwards: 50% of 120 is 0.5 × 120 = 60.

Another method. As a proportion: 60/whole = 50/100, so whole = 60 × 100 ÷ 50 = 120. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60/50%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

60 is the 50% share of 120. The other 50% is 60.

Discounts: if 60 dollars is a 50% saving, the original price was $120.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 50% is 60, then 1% is 60 ÷ 50 = 1.2, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 12, 50% is 60 and 100% is 120.
