How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Divide the part by it: 60 ÷ 0.1 = 600
- Check: Work forwards: 10% of 600 is 0.1 × 600 = 60.
Another method. As a proportion: 60/whole = 10/100, so whole = 60 × 100 ÷ 10 = 600. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =60/10%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.
What the result means
60 is the 10% share of 600. The other 90% is 540.
Discounts: if 60 dollars is a 10% saving, the original price was $600.
Using 1% as a stepping stone
If 10% is 60, then 1% is 60 ÷ 10 = 6, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 60, 50% is 300 and 100% is 600.
