How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05
  2. Divide the part by it: 60 ÷ 0.05 = 1,200
  3. Check: Work forwards: 5% of 1,200 is 0.05 × 1,200 = 60.

Another method. As a proportion: 60/whole = 5/100, so whole = 60 × 100 ÷ 5 = 1,200. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60/5%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

60 is the 5% share of 1,200. The other 95% is 1,140.

Discounts: if 60 dollars is a 5% saving, the original price was $1,200.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 5% is 60, then 1% is 60 ÷ 5 = 12, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 120, 50% is 600 and 100% is 1,200.
