How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 30 ÷ 100 = 0.3
  2. Divide the part by it: 45 ÷ 0.3 = 150
  3. Check: Work forwards: 30% of 150 is 0.3 × 150 = 45.

Another method. As a proportion: 45/whole = 30/100, so whole = 45 × 100 ÷ 30 = 150. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45/30%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

45 is the 30% share of 150. The other 70% is 105.

Discounts: if 45 dollars is a 30% saving, the original price was $150.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 30% is 45, then 1% is 45 ÷ 30 = 1.5, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 15, 50% is 75 and 100% is 150.
