How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Divide the part by it: 30 ÷ 0.6 = 50
  3. Check: Work forwards: 60% of 50 is 0.6 × 50 = 30.

Another method. As a proportion: 30/whole = 60/100, so whole = 30 × 100 ÷ 60 = 50. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =30/60%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

30 is the 60% share of 50. The other 40% is 20.

Discounts: if 30 dollars is a 60% saving, the original price was $50.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 60% is 30, then 1% is 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 5, 50% is 25 and 100% is 50.
