How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
  2. Divide the part by it: 65 ÷ 0.5 = 130
  3. Check: Work forwards: 50% of 130 is 0.5 × 130 = 65.

Another method. As a proportion: 65/whole = 50/100, so whole = 65 × 100 ÷ 50 = 130. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =65/50%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.
