How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05
  2. Divide the part by it: 65 ÷ 0.05 = 1,300
  3. Check: Work forwards: 5% of 1,300 is 0.05 × 1,300 = 65.

Another method. As a proportion: 65/whole = 5/100, so whole = 65 × 100 ÷ 5 = 1,300. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =65/5%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.
