How to work it out
- Work out the discount: 10% of 50 = 0.1 × 50 = 5
- Take it off the price: 50 − 5 = 45
- Check: Add the saving back: 45 + 5 = 50.
Another method. In one step: you pay 90% of the price, so 0.9 × 50 = 45. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =50*(1-10%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.
What the result means
After 10% off, you pay 90% of the price: 45 instead of 50, a saving of 5.
Shopping: an item marked $50 with 10% off costs $45 at the till, before any sales tax.
Stacked discounts
10% off followed by another 10% off is 19% off in total, not 20%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 10% of 50. Two discounts do not add up: 10% off and then another 10% off leaves 40.5, not 40, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
