How to work it out
- Work out the discount: 15% of 50 = 0.15 × 50 = 7.5
- Take it off the price: 50 − 7.5 = 42.5
- Check: Add the saving back: 42.5 + 7.5 = 50.
Another method. In one step: you pay 85% of the price, so 0.85 × 50 = 42.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =50*(1-15%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.
What the result means
After 15% off, you pay 85% of the price: 42.5 instead of 50, a saving of 7.5.
Shopping: an item marked $50 with 15% off costs $42.5 at the till, before any sales tax.
Stacked discounts
15% off followed by another 15% off is 27.75% off in total, not 30%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 15% of 50. Two discounts do not add up: 15% off and then another 15% off leaves 36.13, not 35, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
