How to work it out
- Work out the discount: 40% of 50 = 0.4 × 50 = 20
- Take it off the price: 50 − 20 = 30
- Check: Add the saving back: 30 + 20 = 50.
Another method. In one step: you pay 60% of the price, so 0.6 × 50 = 30. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =50*(1-40%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.
What the result means
After 40% off, you pay 60% of the price: 30 instead of 50, a saving of 20.
Shopping: an item marked $50 with 40% off costs $30 at the till, before any sales tax.
Stacked discounts
40% off followed by another 40% off is 64% off in total, not 80%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 40% of 50. Two discounts do not add up: 40% off and then another 40% off leaves 18, not 10, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
